Compassion Prison Project is working with the University of Notre Dame’s research team, Lab for Economic Opportunities (LEO), on a multi-year study to show how our Trauma Talks program is truly changing lives and communities. Recognizing that traditional approaches have often fallen short when it comes to supporting underserved communities, this partnership is leveraging quantitative research methods to demonstrate how the Trauma Talks curriculum is truly transforming the lives of participants and their broader communities.
From the testimonials we have received, it is clear that the Trauma Talks curriculum is helping participants identify where their decision-making patterns developed. With this awareness, participants have the opportunity to reclaim their self-compassion, their dignity, and literally change their brains by creating new neural pathways through the exercises within the program. In turn, they become more empathetic and more prosocial members of the community, both inside and outside of prison. Their families are thriving by regaining the added support they’ve needed. Communities are thriving by having more positive, productive members of society.
We have an exorbitant wealth of qualitative data through the thousands of testimonials we’ve received from program participants as well as their family and community members. Now, by partnering with LEO, we are building a body of quantitative evidence to prove the transformative efficacy of our Trauma Talks program, which is helping redefine the landscape of criminal justice and community rehabilitation.

Fritzi Horstman is the Founder and Executive Director of Compassion Prison Project. She is a Grammy-award winning producer for her work on “The Defiant Ones”, has been a producer and post-producer on dozens of television projects and documentaries and has directed several films. She believes it is urgent to bring humanity and compassion to those living behind bars and these acts will help transform our society. She has a Bachelor’s Degree from Vassar College.
